Hi there, just to let you know, prior to the first post, you probably do not have to worry about the state of your hair at the moment because you are dying it so dark.

You do have to take into consideration how damaged parts of your hair are though. Do you find the ends are more damaged? Thi could affect the outcome because they will hold more dye, (looking darker than the undamaged bits) and lose colour quickly. (fade lighter than the other bits.)

Also, ifyou are dying your hair black from a much much lighter colour, like blonde, it may be wise to pre0pig your hair. Basically, apply a red dye to your hair first to change the undercoat, then apply the black dye. This will prevent it from fading out to green and will be much darker!

If you are doing a home colour, check the instructions because they all vary. Normally colour is left on for about 30-40 minutes. This can be speed up with heat. Do a strand test by wiping some of the colour off your hair when you think its done, checking the colour is what you want before you rinse it off. If it hasnt quite developed enough yet, reapply the colour to the bit you wiped.

Good luck

What color is your natural hair color? Do you have any hi-lights in it? How porous is your hair from other chemical services? What kind of color are you using i.e. semi, demi, or permanent? All these are factors in the final outcome. And lastly, what do the instructions say? I would suggest a strand test.
