Gray hair and hair coloring?

I color my own hair, lately I have been having a hard time dying my grays. It will color but after one shampoo the gray is back. Why? What hair coloring will you recommend and how often should I be coloring?

I color my hair about every 5 weeks or so to cover my gray and my mothers. I have tried a variety of brands but i find that you do get what you pay for. The cheap brands dont last as long. I like loreal superior performance. It runs about $8-$10. I'm not a professional but I have been dying my hair for about 10 years.

You need a hair color that specifically 'covers up grays' (Excellence Creme comes to mind), not one that 'blends away grays'(like temporary colors). Either that, or find one that tints the greys a slightly different shade and gives you punk streaks, lol. That's what I wound up doing--I'd color my hair burgundy-brown and my white hair would turn cranberry red. Instant punk!

try a permanent coloring instead of a wear %26amp; rinse kind.

There is a hair coloring product called Revlon Colorist which comes with a weekly conditioning color gloss for a boost of color between colorings. Give that a try.

If you dye you like warm reddish tones consider henna... not a kit you would find in the pharmacy because that will turn your hair a weird color since it is already processed. You will need to find pure henna leaf powder. It's a great way to dye grays because it blends them in beautifully and you can do a hnna as often as you like. It's healthy for your hair.
