Hair coloring - to wash dirty hair first or not?

I need the experts on this one please.... My hair needs washed really bad... It has been 5 days because I've been on a hike etc. I want to dye my hair now... but should I wash the oil out of it first? It is mainly just oily and separating more than dirt and dust. Will color hold? I know they say put color on hair while it's dry.... so I was gonna not wash, but I want it to penetrate. Help?

well..you should condition it..but you can't shampoo your hair 24 hours before dying it...so...i suggest conditioning it.

also you cannot shampoo your hair for 3 days AFTER you dyed it...

Hi,I would like to assume you are experienced at "do it yourself" colouring your hair before and this isn't a first time.Colouring your hair without any experience could end in disaster.you can be allergic to the colour ingredients or you could end up a horrid colour that you will need to spend double to fix then it would have cost to get it done proffessionally. My professional advice when working with colour is to see a qualified colourist(hair stylist) not only will they apply the colour correctly, they will also be able to create a colour that is perfect for your hair style, skin colour etc.It is worth the money as bad hair will ruin your look,

As a general rule hair is best to colour when its not freshly washed as the natural oils help protect the scalp and hair.butsince it has been so long you are best to wash it as too much oil doesn't do the colour any justice, also it will have dust and grime as the oilier the hair gets the more dirt attaches to it.

Wash the hair with one good shampoo without scrubbing the scalp.allow the shampoo to sit on the hair was a minute to help penetrate the oil and dirt. condition as normal make sure you comb conditioner through to ensure all hair will be conditioned.

Allow to dry naturally.when dry you can commence the colour.it wont hurt the colour at all,the only reaction might be your scalp may feel a little sensitised while the colour in on.

putting a treatment on after you have shampooed your processed colour. There is no time frame you need to wait until you next wash your hair but freshly coloured hair will normally look and feel cleaner for longer than normal
