Okay, here's the deal...my hair was recently colored to a dark brown (I did it myself)...and oh God, I didn't like it! Way too dark for me! So, I then colored my hair with a medium brown to lighten it from the first coloring. I swear it didn't seem to do a darn thing for my hair! It didn't change its color or anything...it stayed looking dark! Not necessarily darker than the original coloring...It just didn't do anything it seemed. So, now what do I do to LIGHTEN my hair? How do I get it from being this dark! Do I go pick up the lightest of brown color to get it out of being this dark? Do I pick up a blonde hair coloring? I know it wouldn't make me blonde, and I don't want to go blonde...I just need it to not be this darn dark! Last, cuz I know you need to know so you can answer me better, what I WANT is actually to be the LIGHTEST OF BROWN. So, what can I do ladies on my own WITHOUT going to a beautician? Please help me.

the thing is that when you are coloring your hair you need to remember that :
on light hair the color comes three shades lighter
and on dark color hair , dye comes three shades darker
so if you want a certain light color on ur dark hair you need to select a shade that is three shades lighter then your desired color , after then you can get ur desired color. I hope I made my point.

WOW! Long story short = go to a hair dresser, and tell her to do 3 different colors for you! I would put a brunette brown, with honey and hazelnut colors. If you don't have bangs to the left, I would also suggest that %26amp; layering!

You can't lighten your hair with normal hair dye. Unfortunately you will have to bleach it then dye it if you want to lighten your hair.

You should wait at least 48 hours before redying your hair... and make sure you have not washed it for 24 before you dye it. it will take best this way.

You could always call the phone number on the box and talk to one of their colorists. I did once and they were super helpful and really nice. They actually did give some great advice. If i were you , I would let my hair rest. I know you hate the color. But you're going to damage it if you color it day after day. Call the number, figure out what color will do what you want and let your hair rest for a few days. Use some good quality conditioner in the mean time.

hi! I have done what you have done so many times.. what happened toyou is that you didn't lighten the shade enough to lift the brown you put in.. my hair is dark brown and I use miss clairol #42and a capful of #46 with 20 volume developer and it gives me a dark blonde color, i pull my hair mostly in front through a cap and use a recommended bleach from a beauty suppl y or a Sally's. make sure if you do this to put the entire package in a bowl and mix it with what the directions say because if you think you're wasting it your going to screw it up by maybe not putting the right amt of bleach in with the amt of developer... just use the whole pkg. since I am lazy doing the back of my hair i just go to a school for hairdressers and it costs like 10.00! email me if you like and we can talk about it... ronnier101@yahoo.com good luck! by the way, my hair is healthy and growing with this formula! it looks honey colored ... nice..

get a blonde dye, not necessarly a light one, depending on how light you want to go, but deffinitely go with a blonde color, it will lighten it without going blonde

Hi Im a hairdressr so u can ask me anything. I guess u used a permanent colour at first? Anything u put on it after that will not do a thing. Tint colour does not lift tint colour, not even if its a light blonde.
But dont panic. The only way u can lighten it is with bleach. Now DONT put bleach all over unless u want it to go orange and ruing ur hair.
The best thing is a hairdressers. But if u want to save on money u would hav to get some hair bleach powder %26amp; peroxide and put it on like highlights so it will lighten only a few bits of ur hair given it a lighter look all over. The way to apply it once u have mixed it up is (on dry hair) dip the end of a small comb in it and comb it in the hair from the point of the comb frm root to end. Jst keep doing it untill u feel u have done enough.
Leave it for upto 30 mins but no longer.
Hope this helps. Good Luck.
You can always email me if u want any other advise.
X

The best thing to do is to go and get a bleaching kit. yes this will probably make it a nasty looking yellow, but you can then buy the exact shade brown you want and do that over the yellow. This will basically strip the dark out and then re-dye to what you want. I've done this tons of times to go to lighter blondes or browns. It is going to make your hair feel very straw like and processed, so buy a good conditioner if there's not one in the bleach kit. The best recommendations are to go to a Sally's Beauty Supply and tell them you want the Beyond the Zone Radical Bleach Kit (about $9) and then get a small bottle of 20% developer and a bottle of Ion Brilliance liquid dye in the shade you want. You'll have to mix one ounce of the developer with one ounce distilled water to make it 10% (no they don't sell it that way) and then add the 2 ounces of Ion dye. Buy an applicator bottle at Sally's to mix it all in and apply with and wash the gloves from the bleach kit VERY GOOD and reuse them when you dye. This should all cost you about $20 at Sally's and take maybe 2 hours to do at home yourself. Just make sure you don't leave anything on too long.

Rule of thumb for "bathroom beauticians" when choosing a store bought hair color. You must always go at least two but not more than three shades lighter than where you are now when coloring your hair. I would strongly suggest one of two things: (1) Let your hair grow out a bit, %26amp; in the meantime, get your "ends" trimmed every six weeks %26amp; keep it well conditioned. (2) Call a reputable salon %26amp; tell them what happened when you colored your hair twice, %26amp; ask what they would advise, as for the time pattern, for coloring your hair for the third time. Maybe you could get some lighter highlights put in for now, or wait until your hair is in great condition before you get your hair colored again. Once your hair stylist has established what natural tones you have in your hair (red or gold) then you can get your hair colored %26amp; it will look great.
