Coloring hair (timing!)?

The top of my hair is lighter and the bottom darker (but the color has faded, it's been about a year).. *Unfortunantley* I'm coloring out of the box because I can't get to a hairdresser. (I wish!) I know the usual timings are 20-30 minutes for the whole head. Should I begin the top or the bottom first, and which should I leave on for longer? (Meaning, starting the bottom 10 minutes earlier than the top and leaving it on until the time in the directions is up) Help!

start at the roots and go down. Start the timer when you first are putting the color in, that way the color doesn't get too saturated. The correct time would be on the box. Most likely it will be 30 minutes for Loreal products (thats what i used to die my hair red). Im pretty sure that it is 30 minutes for all hair products, just check tha box to make sure, set the timer when you start coloring, and rinse it all out.

Good Luck!

Follow the directions in the box. Most include directions for how to color lighter (gray) roots. It totally depends on what kind of dye it is, but in general, put it on the lighter section first (assuming you are dyeing, not bleaching), and by the time you get to the bottom, it will have been a couple extra minutes, so you can just leave it on the recommended time for the whole head.

depends on the shade ur going......i usually start at my roots cuz im a natural dark blonde and always dye my hair a light blonde......so my roots are darker....and i put it on for about 20 minutes...but you have to be careful about the boxes cuz some of them can really destroy ur hair and the color will come out sometimes the exact opposite of what u want. try loreal products for best results....skip the feria by loreal ones tho....

What's happening is that your hair is healthier at your roots, so the color adheres less well. Color stays in damaged hair better than in healthy hair. So you'll want to try to start at the roots. I always do all the hair closest to my head at the beginning, and only then do the length of my hair. Not only does this let your healthier hair have more time with the dye, but it also keeps everything from becoming a huge mess if your hair is really super long. I'd say go ahead and follow the timer on the box, but if you find that dye washes out of your hair easily, it's not a crisis to push it a bit longer.

For the record, a salon dyejob is not that much better than doing it at home, IF you use good products. Try getting your colors from a beauty supply shop like Sally's, and you shouldn't notice any difference. you might also want to recruit a friend so you can do it faster, and avoid missed strands.
