Did coloring my hair for 15 yrs damage it? If so... how do I avoid that in the future?

A stylist told me that over the counter colors have a lot more peroxide in them and since I colored all of my hair instead of just the roots I damaged it. She went on to explain the colors used in salons have less peroxide, and they color the roots first, then pull an even less toxic one through the rest of the hair in the final stages of coloring. Is all of this true, or do they just want my $70.00 a month? Thanks in advance.

I agree with above, that all coloring techniques do damage to the hair some. Pros have the advantage because they can order from special places on-line and special shops. Why not try to start using shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair? And use a leave in hot oil treatment if its dry and frizzy. If you are so concerned about regaining healthy hair talk to your stylist. She can reccomend and probably sell you some good stuff to correct it. Keep in mind that you may have to use what ever you decide for a while before you see any change. The results will most likely not be immediate. Good luck.

They want your money.

All hair color damages your hair to some extent.

You can avoid this by not coloring your hair!

Or use a temporary color, or one with a lot of conditioning properties.

ITs true, that is why they have stores only salon professionals can go to. I do facials and stufff, but as far as i know, since my mom and sis are stylist, they can control the amount of peroxide in the color. That is why they buy only colors. The peroxide in the general boxes are only one number, where they have a selction. Whoever thinks doing things yourself without training is the same as going to a professional, look at their hair first before taking their word.

Would you go and fix a health problem yourself or go to a doctor?

Hair is important, and you can lose it with one quick process. I prefer pros. Its all on your preference. I bear no expense on my hair. Looks are everything.Even if people dont like to admit it.

Hair salons are probably one of the worlds greatest rip offs. They are right up there with used car salesmen. I think they want your 70 bucks. If you use a coloring kit from the store, have a friend help you apply it. That way it will be even, and you will look fine. Use the money you saved for a nice dinner :)

I'm not too sure, but I know I tried to save money and frosted my own hair occasionally. The result was pretty highlights on a head of straw. I stopped, so I think what you said must be true. I currently use Paul Mitchell conditioner and hair serum which keeps my hair soft, wavy and frizz-free.

coloring your hair does damage it because it dries it out and fades it out. salons do add things to help your hair a little, but it is not worth $70.00. You can avoid damaging your hair in the future by not coloring it, and getting a shampoo and conditioner that helps your hair. Good Luck!!

The best person to ask about you hair is your Hairstylist. It is in there best interest for you to look your best.

Disregard any answered, telling you to use cheap store products, or telling you how to wear your hair without ever meeting you.
