Any ideas for coloring hair that is dark and thick?

I know the best results will come from a salon, but I was wondering if any of you had ideas for at home coloring for my type of hair. It is VERY thick, a little coarse, and dark brown. I know, this seems like a dead end, but I was just seeing if anyone had ANY ideas for me. I want my hair to be a shade of red (anything that is noticable)

My wife's hair is really thick and really long. We use 2 boxes of hair color when we do her hair and check it at the desired time. If it is not the color you want, it leave it on longer. Be sure to check your hair about every 5 to 10 minutes. After you rinse the color from your hair and put the conditioner in it, leave that on for a minute or two longer than it says too. This will help to keep it from drying out as much. We have found that the cheaper brands (Clairol Nice and Easy, LOreal) seem to work the best. If you are trying for a really bright red then I would recommend a brilliant red or a bright red but if you are going for a more like highlights, then any shade of auburn will bring out the natural red tint in your hair. After you do color your hair make sure to use a conditioner EVERY TIME you wash it to keep from drying out.

I had heavy dark hair when I was young and tried having it frosted. Big mistake. It made my hair mushy. I would just high light strans. I also used an auburn hair dye that looked pretty good. You might want to try that.

i have the same problem what you need to do is when you go and get the dye pick all the stuff out and what i do is i buy double of everything so that it fully covers the underneath and brings the color out and i would also suggest getting some one else to do it to make sure it is fully dyed

I have very thick hair. I just have to leave the dye in longer then it says. Ive dyed my hair numorous times. Have my natural color to highlights to blonde to dark brown to light brown to red to very dark brown back to light and trying to get it blonde with dark brown underneath. ha. So thats what i always do.
