i've never done anything to my hair besides wash,brush,and cut it.so i really want something that will be gentle and not hurt my hair

My advice is GO TO A SALON... it is a little more expensive but it is so much better for your hair. I have tried at home and at the salon and there is no comparison!!!! Spend the money... it is worth it.

But a nice semi-permenant or non-permenant color should be good...that is a good way to try out a new color without having full committment to it. I would also recommend just enhancing your color and not going totally crazy with a different color. That way you wont regret it
